Freedom is certainly the supreme good for anything
alive, especially for intelligent beings.
We shall not attempt any in depth definition. Let the
one of a dictionary suffice: "ability to act at will
without restraints."
"Restraints" -the accursed word. Ignorance, weakness,
ill health, morals, laws. All these -and billions more-
are restraints. But, there is a hierarchy to them. The
supreme restraint is to be in prison or live in an
oppressive society such as a police state, the next is not to be alive, the next is to
have a bad health and, after that, to be ignorant.
Life
is never above freedom. Safety and security are always
second to freedom. For without freedom life is torture
rather than enjoyment and pleasure.
